Adobe Sparks for Telling a Story

Hello, readers! I want to tell you about interesting tool for telling a story in online application. Actually, this is my first time using this application, but for me, it is quite interesting and easy to operate. The name of application is Adobe Spark. Below are the steps how to make an account in Adobe Spark:

1.      Open www.google.com

2.     Type “Adobe Spark”.

3.     Choose the uppest website.

4.     Choose “log in”.

5.     Choose “login with facebook / google”.

6.     Input the password of the email.

7.     Input your date, month, and year of birth.

8.     Click “OK”.

9.     Create your title of the video.

10.   Choose “video”.

11.    Choose “start from scratch”.

12.   Look at the tutorial video (this tutorial video is very easy to understand).

13.   Start making your own digital story telling (you can add your photo or video or text or even your voice).

In my opinion, this application have its strength and weakness. The strength is that we can add our photo, video, text, or even voice as we like. We can also move the slides based on how our story was going on. We can also edit it anytime, and anywhere. Meanwhile, the weakness is the application is too heavy to operate. So, sometimes it takes more time to make a digital story telling. Sometimes, the voice cannot be attached.

I will use this application to tell about story (myth or fable) that related to values to my students. However, when I am teaching junior and senior high school, I will use this application for teaching listening to my students. I think, it will be very fun. Thus, my class will not be boring.

Hot Potatoes

          Hi, guys! As the title, on this post, I want to share about an offline application called Hot Potatoes. On the previous post, I have shared about online application to make quizzes. Now, let’s check how to make the offline one!

            Maybe some of you wonder why the name of the application is hot potatoes, just like me. It sounds delicious like my favorite snack. However, it does not. Hot potatoes is an application to make quiz. What make this application different is because this application can be taken, and made offline since you have downloaded it.

1.      The Jquiz program       : Creates questions based on the quizzes.

2.      The Jcloze program     : Creates gap-fill exercises.

3.      The Jcross program     : Creates crossword puzzle which can be completed online.

4.      The Jmix porgram       : Creates jumbled sentence exercises.

5.      The Jmatch program    : Creates macthing or ordering exercises.

Here are some steps to make a quiz using hot potatoes:

1.      Open google chrome.

2.      Open www.google.com

3.      Or simply open https://hotpot.uvic.ca/

4.      Choose one which is suitable with your computer operation system (windows / linux / macOS)

5.      Wait until the download process is done. Then, open it.

6.      Follow the steps of the installation.

7.      Wait until the installation is done.

8.      Open the application.

9.      Choose 1 type  that you want to use for your quiz.

10.  Follow the steps to make it (write the title, the questions, the answers, and the clues).

11.  If you think, it is done, save it.

12.  Save it as you save a document in microsoft word (can be edited).

13.  Save it in .htm (cannot be edited)

14.  Try to open the .htm file in your browser.

15.  Do it, and get a best score.

The benefits I find in this application is that this application can be used freely. Freely here means we can use and access this application offline without being afraid if our internet connection is getting slower. Students may not feel that they are studying because in this application, there is jcross which is like crossword game. So, the students may feel that they are playing, not studying. It also can improve students’ skill in using sophisticated media(s).

The weakness of using this application is that Indonesian teachers or even people do not know about hot potatoes well. We also can say that hot potatoes is not yet well-known in Indonesia. This application can just be reached only in the area which has internet access for downloading the application from the internet.

Sure, I will use this applicaiton for teaching my students, especially for teaching science. Why I think so, because the various types of questions in this application can open the students’ knowledge. The students also can answer the question if they open the correct website.

For B, and C. You should copy and paste the contents into notepad, then open save it in .html. Thus, you can open it in your browser. You can try to fill it.

Online Quiz Using www.kahoot.com

            Hello, guys! I would like to tell you about online quiz using www.kahoot.com. Here it is!

            Kahoot? Maybe some of you ask what it is. Is it a food? Is it a place? Or what? So, kahoot is an application which we can use for making quiz in internet to modify our teaching method. Here are the steps to make it:

1.      Open google chrome.

2.      Type www.kahoot.com.

3.      Click “Sign Up” if you do not have an account yet, and “Sign in” if you already had an account.

4.      Click As a Teacher.

5.      Click Sign Up with Google.

6.      Follow the steps.

7.      Click My Kahoot.

8.      Click one technique you want to use (Quiz, Jumble, Discussion, or Survey). Here, I chose Quiz.

9.      Follow the steps of making the quiz questions, and the answers.

10.  If you have done all of the process, click Save.

11.  The quiz is done. You can edit, preview, play, or share it.

In my side, using kahoot has its own benefit. The benefit is that the students can play game and also learn something at the same time. It also can motivate the students to follow the technology as well. It may make the atmosphere of the class become more exciting.­

However, kahoot has its own weaknesses. 1 of the weaknesses that kahoot forces the students to have their own laptop or gadget. In fact, most schools in Indonesia still do not allow the students to bring their gadget while studying. Kahoot also forces the school to be “a rich school”. Why? Because the school should have a good media, such as LCD, projector, and also computer for each class. We also can say that “Indonesia is not yet the time to use something like that” hehehe.

Another idea I will use this kahoot in my classroom is for teaching some themes which are related to animal, for example. Because in kahoot, we can attach some pictures or even video to make the quiz more interesting.

This is the first time for me to recognize and also use kahoot. It was very exciting. You guys should try it on your own.

Conversation Question for The ESL / EFL Classroom

Hi, friend! Now, I am going to write about a website which I consider it very useful for teaching english. Okay, check it out!

The website that I choose is conversation question for ESL / EFL classroom. The link is http://iteslj.org/questions/. The website actually discusses more about daily conversation as the title. Here is the step how to use the website:

11.       Open google chrome.

22.       Type the link above.

33.       Click “enter”.

44.       Choose 1 topic that you want to use for your teaching.

55.       Choose the questions that are suitable with your teaching topic.

For the reason why I chose that website is because the topics given in the website are easy to undertand by the students. They also can practice it directly. It is also related to daily routines. So, the students will not find any difficulties in practising it.

As I said before that the website provides so many questions we can use for the teaching process that we can easily understand. That thing is also its benefit in using the website. For the weakness, I think, the website is not interesting if the students look at the display directly. There are no pictures at all. It will make the students become bored.

For my future students, I will use the website when I am teaching speaking because speaking is also about conversation. From the website, I can find lots of questions I can use for my students. I also do not need to think hard of the question because the questions are provided by the website.
